Lissan House Visit
Lissan House, one of the few plantation houses not burnt down in Irish history!
On Sunday 23 September 2007, members of Cookstown Rotary Club, family and friends gathered at Lissan House for a wine and cheese afternoon and a guided tour of the house lead by Rotarian Tony McMinn. The group of about 70 people had a most enjoyable time on a beautiful autumn afternoon.
Lissan House came to wider fame when it was runner up in the BBC Restoration programme. Dating from 1613,this plantation house was not destroyed during Irish troubles because it was the site of an important iron works. It was the home of the Staples family from its construction and is now managed by a local trust that hopes to start a restoration programme soon. This will be an ambitious and expensive exercise!
Many thanks to Rotarian Tony ,a member fo the trust ,for organising this visit which gave us a last chance to see the house before work begins. For some members it was a first visit to a piece of history on their own doorstep!
