SHELLEY WALKS ON THE WILD SIDE FOR ACTION CANCER

A local Cookstown business woman is to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!  On 27th of May 2011 Shelley Bolton will be participating in The African Tribal Trek to raise funds for Northern Ireland's leading local cancer charity.

The 70km trek, which takes place from 27th May until 5th June 2011, will allow participants to explore the African Wilderness at its best while supporting their own local community.

This amazing challenge takes place in the Unesco World Heritage site of the Ngorongoro Crater which is set around a volcano rising from the Tanzanian Great Rift Valley.  The local Massai tribe will lead the trek while sharing their local knowledge with the group and showing them around the local village. Participants will walk for up to 8 hours every day through a range of hot landscapes and vegetative grassland and forest. They will scale nearly 3,000 meters to the summit of a live volcano in time for sunrise.

All money raised by the African Tribal Trek will be used to fund Action Cancer's local life saving and support services which are available from Action Cancer House in Belfast and regionally on their BIG BUS.  Such services include counselling for people living with cancer as well as their families, Health checks, health promotion and complementary therapies. Additional to these services Action Cancer provide digital breast screening for women aged 40 - 49 and over 70, ages not screened by the NHS calling programme. They are the only charity in Northern Ireland to provide this valuable service which detects an average of 8 cancers ever month.

Action Cancer Events & PR Officer Leigh Chamberlain commented "This trek is a fabulous opportunity to explore Africa at its wildest while supporting your own local community.
Overseas challenges have raised over £2 million for Action Cancer and continue to be a reliable source of income. I would appeal to anyone who has been affected by cancer or who simply want to support the charity to help in any way.  We hope to raise £90,000 which will go directly toward our local services."

Shelley has an individual target of at least £3,500 to hit by April 2011. So far she has held a Coffee Morning in her home and would like to thank all those who helped out and supported, as she managed to raise a fantastic £1034!

Shelley has also appealed to local businesses for support and would so far like to thank Spinfit Cookstown, Millar, Shearer and Black, Posh and Pans, David Lyttle and Co, The Saddle Room Antiques and Strata. The Rotary Club in Cookstown have also made a donation towards Shelley's fundraising efforts.

Keep your eyes posted for further events such as a Spinathon in early 2011. If you would like to support Action Cancer and Shelley in any way, please contact her on 07709196087 or visit www.justgiving.com/shelleybolton, where donations to Action Cancer can be made safely and securely.
